Warner and More Day-to-Day With Injuries, Practice Window Update on Pearsall

Warner and More Day-to-Day With Injuries, Practice Window Update on Pearsall

It appears the San Francisco 49ers avoided major injury coming out of their 30-13 victory over the New England Patriots in Week 4. By the end of the game, a total of six players had suffered some sort of injury on Sunday afternoon, and that group will begin the week with a “day-to-day” prognosis headed into Week 5 of practice. Those six players include:

  • Linebacker Fred Warner (ankle)
  • Tight end George Kittle (ribs)
  • Defensive lineman Jordan Elliott (knee)
  • Wide receiver Chris Conley (oblique)
  • Fullback Kyle Juszczyk (shoulder)
  • Wide receiver Jacob Cowing (shoulder)

“You definitely feel better when (MRIs and scans) say ‘day-to-day,'” head coach Kyle Shanahan said when asked about Warner’s injury outlook. “If it’s a high ankle sprain or anything like that, that (always takes) some time. I know he’s hurting today, but from the reports and everything, when we say ‘day-to-day’ that gives him a chance to heal up this week.”

In addition to detailing this new set of injuries, Shanahan shed light on an update from 49ers president of football operations/general manager John Lynch on KNBR regarding running back Christian McCaffrey and the Achilles tendonitis that landed him on the Injured Reserve list. The 49ers All-Pro is dealing with “bilateral Achilles tendonitis,” which means it is affecting both his legs.

“During the time he’s had it in both,” Shanahan said. “I think it started in one, you overcompensate, and it goes to the other. Mainly, it’s been one of them that has been bothering him.”

Fred Warner tried to return during 49ers-Patriots but couldn't; Jordan Elliott's injury not believed to be an ACL

McCaffrey recently made an international trip to Germany for treatment to help improve his condition.

While the wait for the veteran running back’s return continues, it’s likely that third-year defensive lineman Kalia Davis will have his practice window opened sometime this week. Davis suffered a knee injury in the preseason opener versus the Tennessee Titans that required surgery. Shanahan said he “would be surprised” if Davis’ practice window wasn’t opened for Wednesday’s practice.

Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is also eligible to have his practice window opened this week, however, per the head coach, a decision has not been made on that just yet. That decision could be made over the course of the next couple days.
