On Tuesday, the USA women’s gymnastics team, comprised of Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, Hezly Rivera, and Suni Lee secured their first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the all-around team final.
Biles and Chiles were the only members of Team USA to compete in all four events. Biles carried the load for Team USA, securing a total score of 58.332 through four rotations, while Chiles secured a total score of 55.465.
The entire team finished with 171.296 points, beating the silver medal winner, Italy, by a 5.802-point gap. The bronze medalist, Brazil, finished 6.779 points behind Team USA.
After receiving their gold medals, Chiles celebrated in style. In a photo that is going viral with nearly a million views through all posts, Chiles is pretending to bite her gold medal, but it was her gold grills that stood out to fans.
One fan summed up Chiles’ epic photo perfectly, “Having your fronts match your Olympic gold medal might be the biggest flex we’ve seen this year.”
Chiles had an all-around solid day during the team final. Her first two rotations were her best performances, scoring 14.400 on the vault and 14.366 on uneven bars. She finished out with the balance beam (12.733) and the floor exercise (13.966).
Biles had top scores in each event, including the vault (14.900), uneven bars (14.400), balance beam (14.366), and floor exercise (14.666). Lee performed in every event except the vault, where Carey filled her spot and secured a 14.800, good for third best out of every competitor.
Chiles will go on to compete in the individual floor exercise finals on Monday, August 5. This will be the only individual final for her. She nearly made the all-around final, picking up a score of 56.065, good for the fourth-best score overall. But Lee beat her out by only 0.067 points with a 56.132 score.
Due to the two-per-country rule that allows only two gymnasts per country to compete in a final, Chiles will not be able to perform in the all-around final with Biles (59.566) and Lee ahead of her in points.
Biles will be able to compete for four more gold medals, qualifying for the all-around, vault, balance beam, and floor finals.
