Speaking with Lily Allen and Miquita Oliver on the BBC’s “Miss Me?” podcast, Eilish said she was “ghosted” last year.
The term refers to abruptly cutting off contact with a friend or lover without explanation, and Eilish said her experience was “insane” and “absolutely unbelievable.” “I was like, are you dead? Are you really dead?” Eilish said.
“He was a friend of mine who I had known for many years. We even planned to meet that day, texting each other and setting a meeting place at 3 o’clock. But then, I never received any messages from him again,” the singer said.
Eilish said she later found out her friend was dating someone else.
“I was just like, ‘Wow,’” she added. “I didn’t know people still did that. I really couldn’t believe people were treating me like that.”
Eilish also shared about losing touch with friends after becoming famous.
“Suddenly I became famous and couldn’t get along with anyone anymore, it was difficult, really difficult,” she confided.
Luckily, her best friend Zoe is still around, but aside from Zoe, Eilish’s only friends are from the crew.
“On my 20th birthday, I remember looking around the room and realizing it was just my employees. And all of them were 15 years or more older than me,” she said.
When one of those employees suddenly quit, Eilish shared that it made her realize they weren’t really friends.
“It was the worst thing that ever happened to me. It made me realize, oh, this is just a job. If they leave, it means we will never see each other again,” she confided.
Over the past year, things have changed for the better, as she has gradually distanced herself from the people she works with and rekindled some old relationships, Eilish said.
“Exactly a year ago, I reconnected with my old group of friends and now, I have a lot of friends,” she said.
Eilish’s third studio album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” was released on May 17.
