Phil Mickelson has cryptic response to PGA Tour jabs: ‘I know things that others don’t’

It wasn’t Phil Mickelson’s play that turned heads at the PGA Championship over the weekend.

When speaking to reporters from the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, where the six-time major winner finished tied for 58th at 10 over after Sunday’s final round, Mickelson was pressed about his former PGA Tour, which he has continuously jabbed on social media following his defection to the rival LIV Golf last year.

Phil Mickelson participates in the 2023 PGA Championship on May 18, 2023.

“I guess it’s because I know some things that others don’t,” Mickelson said, according to ESPN.

“I just want to make sure everybody’s held accountable.”

Mickelson’s cryptic comments come on the heels of his recent confirmation of a New York Times report, which stated last week the 52-year-old pro met with investigators from the U.S. Department of Justice amid their probe into the PGA Tour for potential antitrust violations.

“I know a lot of stuff that will come out later,” said Mickelson, who did not elaborate further on his DOJ discussion.

In addition to Mickelson, DOJ investigators have also met with fellow LIV stars Sergio Garcia and Bryson DeChambeau, according to The New York Times.

The federal government is said to be surveying the PGA Tour’s relationships with the Masters, the Official World Golf Ranking, the PGA of America, the R&A, and the USGA.

Mickelson has taken to Twitter on numerous occasions to defend fellow LIV players, even accusing the PGA Championship of collusion against the controversial Saudi-backed tour in a since-deleted tweet.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Mickelson spoke on the Ryder Cup, noting he doesn’t “see how it’s any concern of the PGA of America what tour we play” in terms of competing in the bi-annual event.

“I don’t see the benefit of the Ryder Cup to change from what it has historically been, which is the U.S. — well, it used to be Great Britain and Ireland — versus Europe,” Mickelson said of the international competition, which is set to take place in Italy in September.

“I don’t see the benefit of changing that. I don’t see how it’s any concern of the PGA of America what tour we play. That’s just my opinion.”

LIV Golf’s Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka — who won his third PGA Championship on Sunday and his fifth major overall — are both eligible to play in the 2023 Ryder Cup as their PGA of America membership extends through next year, ESPN reported.
