Luka Doncic has notched another franchise milestone in his career.

Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic has finished the season as the leading scorer in the NBA. He’s the first player in Mavericks’ franchise history to accomplish the feat. That’s saying something for a team that’s had some great scoring threats over the last 40 years.

Doncic finished the season averaging 33.9 points per game. That’s almost four points ahead of the second place scorer in the NBA, Giannis Antetokounmpo, who averaged 30.4 points per game. Shia Gilgeous-Alexander rounded out the top three scorers with 30.1 points per game.

Unsurprisingly, Doncic also scored the most total points in the NBA this season. With 2,370 points this year, Doncic was more than 100 hundred points ahead of Gilgeous-Alexander, who ended the season with 2,254.

Doncic attempted two less free throws per game than he did last season, but upped his free throw shooting percentage by four points, from 74 percent in 2022-23 to 78 percent in 2023-24. The big improvement, though, came in his 3-point shooting. He increased his frequency, going from 8.2 attempts per game last season to 10.6 per game this year. Despite the increase in volume, though, he was able to raise his 3-point shooting percentage from 34 percent last year to 38 percent this season. That’s actually an incredible accomplishment. It’s hard to increase the volume of shots and increase your efficiency.

Doncic had a career-high scoring game this season, putting up 73 points against the Atlanta Hawks. That’s an insane number to think about, and yet looking back, it felt like an easy 73, and that if the Hawks had been a better team and pushed the Mavericks, Doncic could’ve easily scored some more.

Dirk Nowitzki, one of the greatest scorers in NBA history, never led the league in scoring for a whole season. Part of that was because of the way Nowitzki played, but it also demonstrates just how tough it is to score the most points in the NBA for a whole season. Mark Aguirre, another gifted scorer who played for the Mavericks, never accomplished the feat, either. The list goes on.

Doncic now accounts for four of the top five scoring seasons in Mavericks franchise history. With how easily he gets buckets, it’s likely he’ll have all top five before long.
