WHAT HAPPENED?
The Herons announced the deal Thursday morning, with Weigandt joining through the remainder of the 2024 season. The fullback’s contract with the South Beach club has an option to be renewed – via loan – through the remainder of the 2025 season as well.
His arrival comes weeks after the departure of captain and right-sided defender Deandre Yedlin
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The departure of Yedlin has left a massive hole on the right flank in recent weeks, forcing Herons boss Tata Martino to play with different formations while trying out different players in the role. Now, with Weigandt on the roster, they can return to their 4-3-3 formation that they found success with through the first three matches of the season.
WHAT WEIGANDT SAID
“I’m excited and proud to be joining such an ambitious club like Inter Miami. I’m looking forward to joining my new teammates, wearing the Club’s colors, and giving my all to help the team achieve our objectives,” said Weigandt on the move.
WHAT NEXT FOR MIAMI AND WEIGANDT?
The Herons take on Eastern Conference competitors New York City FC Saturday evening as they look to bounce-back from a shocking 4-0 defeat to New York Red Bulls last weekend.
Lionel Messi is expected to remain on the sidelines for Miami, still nursing a hamstring injury.
