Fans of Lewis Hamilton have voiced their displeasure, suggesting that Max Verstappen may have intentionally taunted Hamilton with his choice of car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. Verstappen drove the RB16B, the car that famously defeated Hamilton in the 2021 World Championship. The festival, which celebrated Red Bull Racing’s 20th season in Formula 1, saw several notable figures from the team, including David Coulthard and team principal Christian Horner.
Verstappen’s reunion with the RB16B was a highlight of the event. “It’s good to bring everyone together and properly celebrate the incredible history of the Team. It is my first time here at Goodwood, so it is great to have such a big Red Bull presence here to mark our 20th year and a nice moment to see all the cars driving together up the hill,” said Verstappen. He added, “It was fantastic to drive the RB16B again too and see everyone who has been a part of the Team’s history come together. There are a lot of emotions from everyone who has been involved over the past 20 years.”
However, Hamilton’s fans took to social media to express their views on Verstappen’s choice. One fan commented, “Max knew exactly what he was doing driving that car. It’s a clear message to Lewis and his fans.” Another added, “Seeing Max in the RB16B at Goodwood felt like rubbing salt in the wound. It’s like he’s reminding everyone of 2021.” A third fan mentioned, “Great to drive the ’21 car again? More like great to remind Hamilton’s fans of their loss.”
Christian Horner, who drove an F1 car from his own team for the first time at the festival, remarked, “It was a privilege to take the wheel alongside some of the drivers and members of this team who have formed such a significant part of Red Bull Racing history. Getting the gang back together was very special.”
The Goodwood Festival provided a platform for Red Bull Racing to showcase their history and achievements. Despite the celebration, the reunion with the RB16B has sparked controversy among fans, adding another layer to the already intense rivalry between Verstappen and Hamilton. As Red Bull continues to celebrate its milestones, the echoes of past championships continue to influence the narrative within the F1 community.
