WHAT HAPPENED?
Messi somehow managed to escape injury after being the victim of a horror challenge from MacNaughton during Inter Miami’s thrilling CONCACAF Champions Cup draw with Nashville on Friday. The two sides are due to meet again on Wednesday in the second leg of their tie, with MacNaughton taking time out to defend his tackle and reveal the online abuse he has received from fans in the aftermath of the game.
WHAT MACNAUGHTON SAID
He told reporters: “I’ve tackled enough players in my career that it is what it is, if someone wants to make a fuss of it after the game or in the game, it’s just another tackle.
“I mean abuse is the same anywhere, in person, online, so I mean I’m ready to play, is hasn’t really affected me.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Messi could return to action for Inter Miami against Nashville after missing his team’s defeat to Montreal last time out. Manager Tata Martino has said Messi was rested for the game, not injured, and the superstar has been spotted in training ahead of Wednesday’s match. MacNaughton may therefore have to face Messi again and will hope not to have upset the Inter Miami star with his tackle. The Argentine has shown many times in his career that he often plays his best football when he’s been riled.
WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI AND MIAMI
The two teams meet again at the Chase Stadium with the tie level at 2-2. Away goals count in this competition meaning the Herons hold the advantage ahead of the return fixture in front of their own fans.
