Ahead of the LIV Golf Singapore event, six-time major champion Phil Mickelson made a massive statement regarding his future. He would claim that his career is now reaching towards its “end” and dropped a huge hint of retiring from golf.

The 53-year-old veteran is one of the top stars of golf. Having turned professional in 1992, the “Lefty” would go on to claim 45 PGA Tour wins in his illustrious career. However, in the past few years, there has been some decline in his gameplay.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV, the HyFlyers GC captain claimed he would now like to help other find the same enjoyment, he once experienced in his career.

I’m 53 now and my career, you know, if I’m being truthful it’s toward its end. Now, I would like to help others find the same enjoyment and fulfillment that the game of golf has provided me.

Phil Mickelson said as per Bloomberg TV.

This though is not the first time where Phil Mickelson has talked about retiring. The World Golf Hall of Famer claimed that he would retire from the sport if he wins the U.S Open. He has finished as a runner-up three times in this event and just needs one victory here to complete the career grand slam.

If I win the U.S. Open, I will retire. That would be my last tournament. I will have achieved the career Grand Slam and I won’t have anything more to prove.

Phil Mickelson said as per Golf Digest.

In the 2023 event, Mickelson ended up missing the cut for the second year running. He though did suffer from some serious heckling from the fans due to his switch to LIV Golf. At the 2024 Masters, he finished T43 along with Shane Lowry.

Phil Mickelson not convinced on merger deal with PGA Tour

Over the past eleven months, the big talking point in golf has been the merger. In June 2023, the PGA Tour dropped a massive bomb regarding a deal with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia that backs LIV Golf. Mickelson has now spoken about this and seemed unconvinced regarding it.

In the interview with Bloomberg TV, Mickelson claimed that the competition the two tours are providing is already elevating the game of golf. He though is not against the merger and expressed it would be a good thing if there no “hostility” between the two circuits.

The competition that both tours are providing is elevating both tours. Is it necessary that there’s a merger? Probably not. But it would be a good thing if there wasn’t any hostility.

Phil Mickelson said.

The talks of the merger have slowed down a bit in the past few months. After the extension of the deadline to finalize the deal, Tiger Woods and other PGA Tour policy board members along with Commissioner Jay Monahan recently meet Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the chairman of PIF.

As per the memo shared by Monahan, the meeting seemed to have gone smoothly. It though remains to be seen when will this “framework agreement” actually go through and merge the sport of golf.
