Billie Eilish: Change is a gift, don’t be afraid!

Billie Eilish paused for a moment before accepting the Oscar for Best Song for What Was I Made For? . She emotionally thanked the first female director Greta Gerwig, before her voice trailed off. Because the offer to write the Barbie soundtrack helped Billie “break out of her creative rut” and “transform” her as a person a lot.

Before writing What Were I Made For?, Billie Eilish had a long period of lack of inspiration. She had barely written anything “good” for months. When director Greta Gerwig showed her some scenes from the movie Barbie , and asked her to write a song for it, Billie was inspired to compose and sing the most beautiful things.

Of course, it wasn’t until What Was I Made For that Billie Eilish became a pop superstar (though she doesn’t see herself that way). At 15, Billie shot to stardom with the release of her successful debut EP. At 18, she won five Grammys, including Best New Artist, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. At 22, Billie won her second Oscar, the first artist born in the 21st century to do so.

Bad things could happen but…

Billie was immersed in music from a young age. Her father used to make his own CDs (half of them Beatles songs) and play them in the car.

Billie’s home was always filled with music, from 1950s soul artists to 1960s rock. Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, Green Day, Avril Lavigne, Coldplay, Lana Del Rey… became Billie’s “spiritual food” since she was a child.

Without music, I don’t know how to organize [my life]. When I’m not writing, I listen. Music gives me courage and it waters my soul.

Music became an indispensable gift in Billie’s life. Funny thing is, Billie felt uneasy if she walked into a house without a piano in the living room.

Billie’s love of music also came from her mother, an amateur composer. She once organized a basic composition course for Billie and her brother (music producer Finneas O’Connell) with 10 sessions in 10 weeks. The most basic lessons helped Billie get interested in playing the piano and composing from her bedroom.

Bad things can happen. But you can write them down and turn them into a song.

Of course, Billie Eilish is not just joking, she is serious. In her bedroom, she has composed many songs about her own anxiety, her best friend’s depression, the dreams of young girls in love, allowing the “feminist” song in her soul to resonate.

Billie has always appreciated the process of writing lyrics, but she doesn’t necessarily have to “tear her heart out” to compose. She still plays the role of a friend, a young person, a mindless doll… to create music that can move others. That magic comes from talent, but also from tireless work, mistakes and efforts to create happiness (that can be heard and felt) through music.

The world is always changing, so are you.

Billie Eilish is loved for her ability to create unique melodies and sounds, as well as her deep lyricism. She is also loved for her ability to explore how “music works” and recreate it perfectly, making it easy for the public to relate to.

It’s hard to get an idea in your head and make it understandable to someone else. But you’re going to do it anyway. Sometimes you have to do it alone, no matter how hard it is.

Every product of value has a lot of effort behind it. Just don’t get discouraged. One of the ways Billie turns “impossible” into “possible” is by recognizing the possibility of transformation. Billie applies this to both her life and her artistic creation.

Change is one of the gifts that exists in this world… Just keep living, don’t be afraid of life. You can change and you can change your thinking.

Billie believes that the basics are the root of creativity. You just need to know the basics and change them a little, and you have created something new. That is why Billie often creates songs that are not like the usual structure, but always change flexibly.

The change is also applied by Billie when using the melody of the previous song to create the beat of the next song; using the story of this song and changing it a bit, to create a new song.

Don’t say you’re into What Was I Made For? if you’re not into My Future from Billie’s previous album Happier Than Ever . Billie has a knack for transforming a single line into a musical icon.

From her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? to Happier Than Ever was a change on many levels. Fans recognized Billie, but also recognized the new version with a few changes.

Billie Eilish’s two attempts at composing songs for films are also considered changes in her approach and musical creativity. Two songs, two different materials, two different stories and narratives, but both won Oscars.

Despite only seeing a few scenes of the film, Billie created masterpieces like No Time To Die and What Was I Made For?, adding to her musical repertoire.

It’s not really about running away from the present and the past and dreaming about your future self, it’s just about keeping faith and being comfortable with the idea of change.

Everything, heaven and earth, Billie Eilish, me and you will change. The world will change and there are always countless possibilities. Therefore, you must accept that nothing is “static”, “standing still”, “unchanging” in this life.

What makes us braver, less cynical, and more adaptable is recognizing change. And of course, making small changes for the better along the way. A little bit every day.
