Mikel Arteta gives ‘very good’ verdict on controversial decision to scrap FA Cup replays as Arsenal boss complains about ‘calendar’
Mikel Arteta believes the prospect of FA Cup replays being scrapped is “very good”, amid an outcry from Football League clubs.
- FA have announced controversial plans
- Pushback from majority of EFL
- Arteta wades in with his opinion
WHAT HAPPENED?
The FA announced earlier this week that they would be scrapping replays in the world’s oldest cup competition, leading to an outcry from fans and EFL clubs, some of whom claimed they were not consulted. The governing body have since doubled down on their plan, with the organisation believing that the tournament requires a significant overhaul.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Arteta has given his opinion, too, claiming that the prospect of fewer fixtures for the Gunners would be a positive, although it seemingly ignores lower-league concerns of minnows being robbed of the chance of playing at the Emirates, particularly if Arsenal are drawn away in the third round against an EFL, or even a non-league, club.
WHAT ARTETA SAID
Arteta told reporters: “We can’t look at that in an isolated way, but with the calendar that we have with the players. I think it’s a very good possibility.”
WHAT NEXT?
Arsenal are next in action on Saturday against Wolves and will hope to ratchet up the pressure on current leaders Manchester City, who are in FA Cup action against Chelsea in this weekend’s semi-final. As a result, if the Gunners win, they could end the weekend top.
