The video, produced by Eilish herself, is a message from the singer to her fans about her right to bodily integrity, and that of each of us. The short film debuted in Miami, as part of the young singer’s “Where do we go?” World Tour.
Set to a slow yet haunting electronic soundtrack, the short film shows Billie Eilish gradually stripping down to her bra, and then diving into the water. The video, read by Billie, attacks body shaming , a “cancer” of today’s digital age, and she herself is a victim of it!
“The body I was born with – isn’t that what you want?” Eilish asked.
“You have opinions about the things I say, the music I write, the clothes I wear, my body. Some hate what I wear, some praise it, some use it to insult others, and some use it to insult me…”.
“All the time, everywhere, nothing I do escapes your eyes. So if I feel those hungry looks, those disapproval, those sighs of relief, if I live on them, I will never be able to move forward.”
Eilish continued to question: “Do you want me to be slimmer? Weaker? Softer? Taller? Do you want me to be quiet? Do my shoulders excite you? My breasts? Am I my waist, my hips?”
And Eilish dives under the water, concluding in the video: “We decide all of these things. We decide their value. If I wear more layers of clothing; if I wear less; who decides my value? What does that mean?”
“Is my worth based solely on your perception? Your opinion of me is none of my business.”
In many interviews with the press about her fashion style, Billie Eilish mentioned that she was criticized and ridiculed. However, the singer affirmed that she chose baggy clothes because she did not want the world to know everything about her.
She further explained that when people cannot see the figure and curves behind the outfit, they will not talk.
Earlier this month, Eilish announced that she was postponing all shows on her Where Do We Go? tour, and would return to the UK in July for massive stadium shows.
She also recently collaborated with famous artist Takashi Murakami to create a clothing line for Japanese fashion brand UNIQLO.
At the 2020 Grammys, Billie Eilis won 5 awards including 4 coveted main categories: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Best New Artist.
