Caitlin Clark did not exactly end her regular season with a bang on Thursday, September 19, as the Indiana Fever suffered a 92-91 loss in their season finale against the Washington Mystics.
The 22-year-old played just 20 minutes in the game with the Fever already having secured the No. 6 seed in the playoffs beforehand. Clark finished with eight points, five rebounds, eight assists, a steal and two triples.
Despite her rather modest numbers in this one, Clark was still able to make history as she ended the regular season of what has been an iconic rookie campaign. A testament to this fact is how the Fever guard has become the first player in WNBA history to lead the league in both assists and three pointers made.
Don’t get confused. This is not a rookie record. That is, no other player in the history of the WNBA, regardless of years played, has ever achieved this incredible feat.
This speaks volumes of Clark’s incredible rookie run — a notion that has left more than a few fans on X, formerly Twitter, in disbelief.
“In her rookie season….. this is ridiculous,” stated a supporter.
“That is just wow!! She’s incredible & I love watching her play!” said another.
“What can’t Caitlin Clark do?” asked a fan.
“✨ IN WNBA HISTORY ✨” reiterated another.
For added context, StatMamba also pointed out that in the men’s side, only one player has ever achieved this same feat in the history of the NBA. This was Hall of Fame point guard Gary Payton who led the league in assists and triples in 2000.
