The Cincinnati Bengals went into Arrowhead Stadium with a simple goal. Win against the Kansas City Chiefs to get their first win of the season. For much of the game, it looked like Joe Burrow had Patrick Mahomes‘ number until the closing quarter, when a flag against Ja’Marr Chase ended that possibility.
The fourth-year receiver was brought down by Chiefs corner Trent McDuffie at around the 10:27 minute mark. Ja’Marr Chase was incensed as he believed the tackle warranted a flag.
Instead, as the referee suggested that it was not, he kept on arguing as Joe Burrow tried to stop him. But as he continued arguing, the referee threw the flag, penalizing the Bengals 15 yards and impeding their drive. Chase continued his outburst as Burrow tried his best to not make the situation worse.
If not for that flag, the Cincinnati Bengals could have tried to continue their march down the field. Instead, they had to settle for a field goal to increase their lead to 23-25. That field goal ended up not being enough as the Chiefs marched down and scored a field goal to update the scoreboard 26-25 in their favor. The Chiefs won their second game of the season on a day they looked a bit off of their usual dominance.
Chase, who is in a contract impasse with his employers, felt that McDuffie used an apparent hip drop tackle to bring him down. He was livid, eager to win as much as the rest of the squad. But had he kept his calm, the end result could have swung in their favor.
Ja’Marr Chase endured horrible outing in loss against Chiefs
This outburst summed up a tough night for Ja’Marr Chase. The three-time Pro Bowler did not participate in training camp due to his contract standoff. That showed, as he struggled to impose his mark on a game that was not necessarily the best outing for Patrick Mahomes and his teammates.
Chase ended the night with four receptions for 35 yards. A subpar performance considering his exploits in the past few seasons helped the Cincinnati Bengals get a one up over their AFC rivals. What made matters worse is that due to his lackluster performance, Joe Burrow had to rely on new teammate Mike Gesicki more than usual.
The Bengals were without Tee Higgins and a couple of starting offensive lineman. Despite those absentees, the team’s performance was good enough to try for a win. If only Ja’Marr chase kept his cool.
