NFL insider details Brock Purdy’s starring role in 49ers’ $50,000,000 cap space trick with Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Williams contracts extended

More good news has come out of San Francisco this morning with the 49ers and star left tackle Trent Williams nearing a contract extension, thus ending his holdout. Williams and his agency made social media posts on their way to San Francisco this morning, confirming that a deal was close to being finalized.

49ers must learn lesson from Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams sagas with Brock Purdy negotiation on horizon

Williams threatened to continue his holdout into the start of the season, but it seems as if the 49ers will get its star offensive lineman back in time for their season opener. That game will be against the New York Jets next Monday night.

When Williams signs his new deal, he is expected to be one of the highest-paid offensive linemen in NFL history. According to overthecap.com, the 49ers have just over $50 million in available cap space this season.

This is largely in part due to Brock Purdy’s relatively cheap contract that has him making $1 million this season. NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero detailed how Purdy’s cheap contract has allowed the 49ers to have so much money.

“How are the #49ers affording to get all these contracts done? Believe it or not, they entered today with an NFL-high $50 million in 2024 cap space, thanks largely to a league-high rollover of unused cap from 2023. The beauty of having a top QB making under $1 million.”

Purdy signed a four-year, $3.7 million rookie deal and accounts for just $1.04 million toward San Francisco’s cap space.

A week ago, the San Francisco 49ers weren’t sure whether or not they’d have Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams to start the 2024 season. Both Aiyuk and Williams were seeking new contracts.

Aiyuk had a ‘hold-in’, meaning he was still present at team activities and practices, but didn’t partake in any. There were trade talks with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots and other teams, but Aiyuk and the 49ers agreed to a four-year, $120 million deal this past Friday.

Prior to this morning, there was no update on Williams’ progress on a new contract with the team. News circulated that Trent Williams was threatening to hold out and miss some games if a deal wasn’t agreed upon before the regular season.

With a deal that seems to be set in stone, the 49ers will have two of their best offensive players to begin the season. That bodes well for the team.
