On a recent episode of ESPN’s popular debate show First Take, NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe made a bold declaration about the state of the Dallas Cowboys. Sharpe argued that the Cowboys should “immediately pivot” and make signing star quarterback Dak Prescott and star running back Dalvin Cook their top priorities this offseason.
“The Dallas Cowboys need to immediately pivot and sign Dak Prescott and Dalvin Cook,” Sharpe stated emphatically. “Forget about all this other stuff, they need to lock those two guys up.”
Prescott, 29, is set to become an unrestricted free agent after playing the 2022 season on the franchise tag. The Cowboys have reportedly been engaged in contract negotiations with Prescott, but a long-term deal has not yet been reached. Sharpe believes the Cowboys cannot afford to let Prescott walk.
“Dak Prescott is a top 5 quarterback in this league. You’re not going to find another one like him,” Sharpe said. “If you let Dak walk out the door, you’re going to be set back 5-10 years trying to find another franchise quarterback.”
As for Cook, the 27-year-old Minnesota Vikings running back is also set to become a free agent this offseason. Sharpe believes the Cowboys should make a strong push to sign him as well.
“Dalvin Cook is a top 3 running back in the National Football League. I know Ezekiel Elliott is there, but Dalvin Cook is a different type of animal,” Sharpe argued. “You pair Dak Prescott with Dalvin Cook and that’s as dynamic of an offense as you’re going to find in the NFL.”
Sharpe believes that landing both Prescott and Cook would immediately vault the Cowboys into the Super Bowl conversation. He pointed to the recent success of other teams that have paired elite quarterbacks with elite running backs, such as the Kansas City Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes and Jerick McKinnon.
“If the Cowboys can sign Dak Prescott and Dalvin Cook, they instantly become one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl,” Sharpe declared. “That’s the kind of dynamic playmakers you need to compete at the highest level in today’s NFL.”
While Sharpe’s proposal may seem ambitious, there’s no denying the talent of Prescott and Cook. If the Cowboys can find a way to sign both players, it would certainly give them one of the most formidable offenses in the league. Cowboys fans will be eagerly awaiting to see if the team heeds Sharpe’s advice and makes a serious push to land these two big-name free agents.
