PGA Tour members Adam Scott and Webb Simpson were heavily criticised for accepting yet another sponsor exemption into a $20,000,000 signature event.

Adam Scott and Webb Simpson have attracted more heat after the PGA Tour player directors accepted sponsor exemptions into the Wells Fargo Championship. 

Simpson secured his fourth sponsor exemption into a signature event over the weekend along with former world number one Scott, Gary Woodland and Matt Kuchar.

It’s a thorny topic and the optics aren’t great considering Simpson and Scott’s inclusion into the field at Quail Hollow appear to many as a kickback for being part of the Tour’s policy board.

Simpson has apparently offered his resignation from the board on the basis that Rory McIlroy re-joins in an apparent push to expedite peace talks with LIV Golf’s backers.

Some players have called out the likes of Scott and Simpson.

PGA Tour member Dylan Wu previously put the duo on full blast.

He acknowledged they are both ‘great players’ but added: “Sponsor exemptions going to the same players every elevated event doesn’t seem to follow the ‘play better’ saying.

“Seems like ‘be more famous’ or ‘know the right people’.

The latest decision has not gone down too well with golf fans on X.

Whilst Simpson does live in Charlotte and is a member at Quail Hollow, it has been pointed out the Tour should stick to meritocracy given the party line to get into the bumper prize purse events is to simply play better.

“If not, then they are just words without meaning,” one X user wrote. “I like Webb Simpson, but I disagree with this.”

Another added: “The PGA Tour is in a sad spot when they have to give sponsors exemptions to Webb Simpson since LIV took all the superstars.”

This person wrote: “These events could change the life of a younger guy. Webb just taking $40,000 handouts with these”

Simpson has defended himself, most recently in an interview with Golfweek.

He said that he gladly accepts people’s criticism and feedback but believes he has done nothing wrong.

Simspon previously explained: “I told another player this year who had an issue with board members getting spots.

“I said, ‘I know it looks political. I would argue it’s not political at all.’ The relationships I built, I built over a long period of time.

“I told this player that if we got something wrong, if we missed something, we want to learn from it.”

The Wells Fargo Championship will be played over 9-12 May.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is not in the field as his wife Meredith is due to give birth to their first child any day now.

And world number six Ludvig Aberg has withdrawn, citing a knee injury.
