LIV Golf rebel Jon Rahm hints at PGA Tour exit regret as he lists tournaments he misses playing

Jon Rahm made a mega-money move to the LIV Golf setup for 2024, but the Legion XIII captain has admitted there are group of PGA Tour events he misses competing in

Jon Rahm has admitted there are five PGA Tour events in particular that he misses competing in on the back of his record-breaking move to LIV Golf for the 2024 campaign.

Jon Rahm discussed the future of professional golf

Rahm became LIV’s marque signing last December, as the former world No. 1 signed a deal worth a reported £450 million. In doing so the two-time major champion gave up his playing rights on the PGA Tour, having followed in the footsteps of Phil Mickelson and co in being banned from the American-based circuit.

The Spaniard announced himself as one of the top stars of his generation whilst competing on the PGA Tour, having won 11 titles during his time on Tour, including four in four months in 2023.

Jon Rahm now plays his golf on the breakaway circuit

One year on though, the 29-year-old’s loyalties now lie with the LIV setup which ensured he was unable to defend three of the titles he won one season earlier. Two of those in the Genesis Invitational and American Express were highlighted as events he would love to return to make a return to in the future, alongside the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the Farmers Insurance Open and the Players Championship.

“Right now obviously it’s 14 LIV events that I want to play,” he said ahead of his first taste of LIV Adelaide this week. “So that, majors, Ryder Cup for sure, and then after that, yeah, there’s some PGA Tour events that if it’s not conflicting with my LIV schedule I’d love to go play.

Jon Rahm admits he missed playing in The American Express now that he's on LIV Tour

“I’ve said numerous times and I’ll say it again, Palm Springs [the American Express], Torrey Pines [Farmers Insurance Open], Phoenix [WM Phoenix Open], LA [Genesis Invitational], if I’m allowed to be able to play, the Players [Players Championship]. Those are events that if I could, I would love to play.”

Rahm will, of course, be relying on both the PGA Tour and Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) coming to some sort of peace agreement sooner rather than later. Last June it was announced that the two rivals had reached a shock framework agreement that would end the ongoing feud between the Tour and LIV.

Jon Rahm still wants to play on PGA Tour after LIV Golf move

Ten months on though, neither side are yet to reach a finalised resolution. For Rahm one of the key decisions to make the Saudi switch was the announcement of a proposed agreement between the rival tours. “What opened the door a little bit was that PGA Tour and LIV agreement,” Rahm commented.

“So when that happened, I was like, well, we are definitely coming together. There is something happening, so at least I owe it to myself to hear what they have to offer and what their vision is. I figured I owed it to myself to hear them out, which is what I did when the season was over.”

Column: Is Jon Rahm's defection to LIV the beginning of the end for golf as we know it?

On the uncertain future of pro golf, he added: “We all want to see this resolved. Like I’ve said many times, we have the opportunity to take golf to the next level in the global markets, and I think if done properly we can come up with a better product for anybody, and putting golf as a bigger product in general as a worldwide sport.”
